Classes and other academic activities will resume at Chittagong University (CU) today after a ten-day stalemate.

The campus will crawl back to life as Progressive Student Alliance (PSA) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) withdrew their siege following written assurance by Vice-chancellor Prof AJM Nuruddin Chowdhury that their demands would be fulfilled.

The BCL laid a siege to the campus on April 3 to press its five-point demand which includes investigation into the attack on Sham-sunnahar Hall students on March 29 and 30 by activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and security of BCL men on the campus.

The VC at a meeting with PSA leaders on Saturday assured its leaders that immediate steps would be taken to arrest JCD activists who attacked a PSA procession on March 31.

PSA, a forum of three left-leaning student organisations, laid a siege to the campus on April 3.

In a related development, president of CU Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) Jahid Hossain Bhuiyan at a meeting of CU Syndicate regretted the April 2 attack on Lecturer Akhter Hossain Piaru by some ICS activists at university central playground. Protesting the attack, the CU Teachers Association observed two-day work abstention on Monday and Tuesday.
