Political parties barring BNP and Jamaat, socio-cultural and sports organisations yesterday protested construction of wall on the Khulna Circuit House Maidan by the district administration on security reasons.

Leaders of these organisations, office bearers of 350 football and cricket clubs, Khulna District Sports Association (KDSA), Khulna Krirha Lekhok Samity and Khulna Players' Welfare Organisation (KPWO) jointly held a rally at the outer stadium demanding immediate dismantling of the wall.

Speakers of the rally said the Circuit House Maidan is a historic place. Besides, the main Eid congregation in the city is held there. It is the lone place where huge public meetings, international trade fairs, agriculture exhibition and training on sports are held, they said.

So, construction of the wall will be obstructed at any cost, the speakers said.

A seven-day agitation programme was announced at the rally. It includes laying siege to the wall construction site, exchange of views with people, submission of memorandum to city Mayor and holding of a convention of all political parties, professional groups and socio-cultural organisations.

When contacted, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Khulna AKM Benjamin Riazi told The Daily Star that Khulna circuit house building is a property of the state. Whatever may be its historical background, we cannot overlook security risk as VVIPs including prime minister stay there during official visit.
