8 killed during storm, lightning strike in Sunamganj, Habiganj

At least eight people were killed and two others injured in separate incidents of storm and lightning strike in Sunamganj and Habiganj today (April 14, 2022).

At least eight people were killed and two others injured in separate incidents of storm and lightning strike in Sunamganj and Habiganj today (April 14, 2022).

Among the eight, five people were killed in Sunamganj's Jagannathpur upazila early today.

The deceased were identified as Mausama Begum (35), her daughter Mahina Akhter (3) and her son Hossain Miah (1); and Mukul Khan (50) and his son Masud Khan (7), reports our Sylhet correspondent quoting police.

A tree fell on the tin roof of Mausama Begum's house at Sulemanpur village in the early hours today -- injuring Mausama and her two children.

Locals later rescued them and took them to the Jagannathpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead, confirmed Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jagannathpur Police Station; and Nazrul Islam, panel chairman of the Patli Union Council.

Meanwhile, Mukul Khan went out to harvest paddy with his two sons, brother-in-law, and brother-in-law's son around 7:00 am. They were hit by lightning at that time. Two of them died on the spot.

Mukul's other son Rimon Khan (11) and his brother-in-law's son Tanvir Hossain (7) have been admitted to Ajmiriganj Upazila Health Complex in Habiganj with serious injuries, said Sullah Police Station OC Aminul Islam.

In Habiganj, three people, including a schoolgirl, were killed in lightning at different places in Baniachang upazila of Habiganj district this morning.

The deceased were identified as Alamgir Mia (26) of Eralia village in Khagaura union, Mohammad Hossain (12) of Tatari Moholla and Jhuma Begum (13) of Jati-Karnopara area in the upazila, said Baniachang Police Station Emran Hossain, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.
