The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Board of Trustees has handed over cheques worth Tk 25 lakh to the families of five people killed in road accidents in Gazipur last year.

Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin presented the cheques yesterday afternoon to the families of Abu Bakkar Siddique, Bijoy Hossain, Ahidul Islam, Sumon Hossain, and Monira Khatun.

BRTA Assistant Director SM Mahfuzur Rahman confirmed the handover The Daily Star around 10:00am today.

"Cheques worth Tk 25 lakh have been handed over to the families of the five deceased. While this amount cannot compensate for the loss of a life, it will provide some support to the families," the BRTA official said.

Jyotsna Khatun, wife of victim Ahidul Islam, said, "My husband died in a road accident a year ago. At that time, I could not afford to raise our two children. I have now received a cheque of Tk 5 lakh, and I will try to support my children with this money."

The accidents occurred on different dates in 2024.
