Five fish traders were killed after a pickup van rammed into a covered van parked beside a road in Chattogram city early yesterday.

Four others were injured in the accident that occurred around 5:15am in the City Gate area.

Three of the deceased were identified as Kala Das, 30; Akash Das, 28; and Ajit Das, 30.

A total of 10 fish traders were on their way to the Fishery Ghat in Chattogram to buy fish, said Alamgir Hossain, deputy assistant director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Upon receiving the information, a firefighting unit from the Agrabad station reached the spot and conducted rescue operations, he added.

Sajjad Saikat, a sub-inspector of Akbarshah Police Station, said according to a preliminary investigation, a mini pickup coming from the Faujdarhat area towards AK Khan lost control and rammed into the rear of a large covered van parked beside the road.

Five people were killed on the spot and four others were injured, he said.

The injured were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, while the bodies of the victims were kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy, the SI added.
