Man, hit by covered-van while fleeing after mugging, dies: police

An alleged mugger died after being hit by a covered-van, while fleeing after a mugging incident, in Dhaka's Chawk Bazar area last night.

The deceased was identified as Joy (20), who was an accused in a mugging case earlier, police said.

The incident took place around 8:30pm when a group of seven to eight muggers intercepted security guard Riaz Uddin on his way home at Urdu Road area.

As Riaz screamed for help, a patrol team of police rushed to the spot. Sensing police presence, the muggers attempted to flee when Joy was hit by a covered-van while crossing the road, said Kabir Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Chawk Bazar Police Station.

He died on the spot, police said.

Police picked up two muggers -- Arafat Hossain Piyas (18) and Hasib Hossain (18) -- from the spot.

The body was sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College morgue for autopsy.
