Mawa expressway crash: Bus to be examined to verify brake problem claim

The bus involved in Friday's fatal crash at Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway will be examined by experts today to verify whether a brake problem caused the accident.

"After accidents, drivers often claim brake failure as the cause. The bus will be examined today to verify this," said AKM Akhtaruzzaman Bosunia, Additional DIG and Police Superintendent of the Highway Police Gazipur Region.

He was addressing a press briefing at Hasara Highway Police Station in Srinagar, Munshiganj, this afternoon.

After his arrest yesterday, the bus driver, Md Nur Uddin, claimed that his vehicle had a brake issue and that he could not stop the bus.

The accident, which killed six people, including women and children, prompted the Highway Police to emphasise the need for systemic changes.

Highlighting a culture of illegal driving facilitated by bribery, Akhtaruzzaman vowed to dismantle it. "We will take action against anyone involved, regardless of their position, even if they are police officers," he added.

He also noted that a shortage of trained drivers contributes to road safety risks.

A case was filed last evening with Dhaka's South Keraniganj Police Station regarding the deaths of six passengers after a bus hit a private car and a motorcycle on the expressway. The bus driver, Md. Nur Uddin, and the owner of Bepari Paribahan Company, Dablu Bepari, have been arrested.
