Run over while chasing mugger, Manikganj AL leader dies in capital
An Awami League leader of Manikganj was run over by a truck while he was chasing a mugger who snatched his mobile phone in the capital's Asad Gate area last night.
The deceased was identified as Tajul Islam, 39, a member of Manikganj Municipality unit of AL, said Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Officer-in-charge Utpal Barua.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. Tajul was returning home in Manikganj after completing his work in Dhaka, said Sub-Inspector Moshiul Azam Bhuiyan of the police station.
When his car reached Asad Gate around 11:30pm yesterday, a mugger snatched his phone. As he tried to chase the mugger, a truck ran over him.
He died on the spot, the SI said.
His body was later taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital around midnight for autopsy.
Two cases were filed over the incident -- one for the mugging with Mohammadpur Police Station, and another filed over the death with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
