3 get death sentence, 5 life term in prison for triple murder in Munshiganj
A Dhaka tribunal today sentenced three people to death and five others to life in jail in a case filed over a triple murder in Munshiganj in 2021.
The tribunal acquitted 10 others as their involvement with the killings was not proven.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. The three convicts who got death penalty are Rakibul Hasan Sourav, Roni Bepary and Shihab Pradhan.
The others -- Shakib Pradhan, Shamim Pradhan, Anik Bepari, Md Raihan and Jahangir Hossain alias Chhota Jahangir -- were given life term imprisonment for the offences.
Of them, Shihab, Shakib and Shamim are siblings.
During the announcement of judgment, Roni, Shamim and Shakib were brought from the jail custody while Anik, Raihan, Sourav, Chhoto Jahangir and Shihab are absconding.
Judge Masud Karim of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 handed down the sentence in presence of three convicts at the courtroom.
The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, said the judge in his verdict.
Soon after the judgment, Khaleda Akhtar, complainant of the case, expressed her dissatisfaction over the verdict.
She said, "I did not get justice in this case. I will go to the higher court against the judgment. I will continue to fight for justice as long as I live."
Then she broke down in tears and raised questions about the judicial system.
According to the case statement, a clash broke out between two groups at Uttar Islampur of Munshiganj centring eve-teasing of Shamim's sister around 8:30pm on March 24, 2021. That night, the two sides sat to resolve the issue.
At that time, Md Emon Hossain, 22, Md Shakib Hossain, 19, and Mintu Pradhan, 40, were stabbed to death by Sourav, Shihab and Shamim.
Later on March 26, Khaleda Akhter, also the wife of deceased Mintu, filed the case against 12 people and 10 to15 unidentified people with Munshiganj Sadar Police Station.
After an investigation, police pressed charges against 18 people on June 8, 2022. The charges were framed against them on September 17, 2024.
