Ex-law minister Anisul Huq shown arrested in embezzlement case

Former law minister Anisul Huq was shown arrested today in a case filed on charges of amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.

Judge Md Zakir Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court passed the order after Deputy Director Md Jahangir Alam, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Anisul before the court and submitted an application in this regard.

In the application, the IO said the former law minister was earlier arrested in another case filed with the Jatrabari Police Station over the death of Jisan in Matuail during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 20 last year.

Earlier, on January 1, the ACC filed a case against Anisul Huq with its integrated district office in Dhaka.

According to the case statement, Anisul Huq allegedly acquired and retained assets worth Tk 146.19 crore that could not be explained by his known sources of income. He is also accused of conducting transactions amounting to Tk 349.15 crore through 29 bank accounts.

Anisul was arrested in Dhaka's Sadarghat on August 13.

The following day, he was placed on a 10-day remand in a case filed with New Market Police Station over the death of shop employee Shahjahan Ali, 24, in the capital's New Market area on July 16.

He has also been shown arrested in a number of cases filed with different police stations in the capital.
