Husband on the run after garment worker found dead in Ashulia flat

A man is on the run after allegedly murdering his wife, a garment factory worker, and setting fire to their rented flat in Ashulia, Savar.

Police recovered the body of 28-year-old Roksana Akhter early today from a ground-floor flat of a five-storey building owned by Kalam Madabar in the Tongabari area.

Roksana, originally from Sherpur, worked as an operator in a local garment factory and had been living in the flat with her husband, whose identity couldn't be confirmed by police or local residents.

Kalam, the building owner, said he woke up during the night to the smell of smoke and rushed downstairs, where he found the doors of all ground-floor flats locked from the outside. With the help of neighbours, he managed to open the door to Roksana's flat, from where smoke poured out.

Upon extinguishing the fire, they discovered Roksana's bloodstained body hidden beneath a rolled-up mattress.

Md Shahinur Kabir, additional superintendent of police (Savar Circle), said that initial investigations suggest the husband killed Roksana and then attempted to destroy evidence by setting the flat ablaze.

"It appears the perpetrator tried to stage the incident as an accidental fire to mislead investigators. We are conducting a thorough investigation and working to locate and arrest the absconding husband," he added.
