Mujib Borsho Celebrations: ACC forms seven-member body to probe irregularities

The Anti-Corruption Commission has formed a seven-member committee to investigate allegations of misuse of  Tk 4,000 crore from the state treasury for celebrating "Mujib Borsho" and constructing over 10,000 murals and sculptures of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and others will also be investigated in this connection, said ACC public relation officer Akhtarul Islam yesterday.

The committee is led by ACC deputy director (Inquiry and Investigation-2) Md Monirul Islam. Other members include assistant directors Afnan Jannat Keya, Mubasshira Atia Tama, SM Rashedul Hasan, AKM Mortuza Ali Sagar, Mohammad Monirul Islam, and Abdullah Al Mamun.

Meanwhile, Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah, chief organisers of the National Citizens' Party (NCP) for northern and southern regions respectively, met ACC chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen yesterday.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting at the ACC headquarters, Hasnat said, "We have come to the ACC with some complaints. We have submitted them in writing."

When asked about the nature of the complaints, he replied, "Very confidential."

Asked about whom the complaints were against, Hasnat responded, "That too is very confidential. If we reveal it now, it won't remain confidential. Besides, the wrongdoers will become alert."

 Sarjis said, "In the past, some people used the ACC to build empires. On the other hand, many ordinary people have been harassed without any wrongdoing."

"Now, we don't expect anything like that to happen. We had some complaints, which we've submitted in writing. That's why we came here. We're not saying anything more at this moment."

Meanwhile, ACC filed two separate cases against former lawmaker Abdul Wadud and his wife Morjina Wadud for illegally acquiring assets worth over Tk 1.78 crore.

ACC director general Akhtar Hossain said, "Abdul Wadud has been named as an accused in both cases."
