Rangpur Jubo League leader arrested on charge of killing pedestrian

Nahid Hasan Saddam, joint general secretary of Rangpur district unit of Jubo League, was arrested this afternoon in connection with a case filed over the death of Mahmudul Hasan Munna during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur last year.

Law enforcers arrested Saddam in Rangpur city during a joint operation, said Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali.

Several locally made weapons were seized from his possession, he said.

Saddam is a resident of Alamnagar Babupara in the city. He had been in hiding since August 5 last year after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

On August 4 last year, police and ruling party activists reportedly opened fire on protesters, leaving pedestrian Mahmudul Hasan Munna dead near Raja Rammohan Club during the mass uprising.

Saddam, armed with a weapon, was allegedly seen participating in the attack. His images holding a sharp weapon went viral on social media, drawing significant public attention.

Following the incident, Munna's father filed a case on August 29 last year with the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, mentioning names 128 people as accused including former social welfare minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed and his son.

Police said investigations are ongoing in the case.
