HC issues rule upon government

The High Court today issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be directed to give Tk 12 crore as compensation to the family of university student Mehedi Hasan Shaon, who died from burn injuries sustained in a gas pipeline explosion in the capital's Dhupkhola in May this year.

The court also ordered the deputy commissioner of Dhaka to conduct an inquiry by an official not below the rank of additional deputy commissioner into whether there was any negligence in preventing the explosion and death of Mehedi, an honours third-year student of Jagannath University.

The DC was ordered to complete the probe and submit its report to the HC in 60 days, Deputy Attorney General Kazi Mynul Hassan told The Daily Star.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil issued the rule and order following a writ petition filed by Mehedi's father Abdul Latif seeking necessary directives.

Mehedi, who sustained burn injuries on May 1, died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on May 6.

Lawyer Md Moniruzzaman Lincon appeared for the writ petitioner.
