Three stabbed after refusing extortion demand at Mymensingh Kali Puja mandap

Three people were stabbed by miscreants after they refused to pay extortion money at a Kali Puja mandap in Mymensingh city last night.

The injured are Manik Das, 30, his wife Bharati Rani Das, 21, and Sadhan Chandra Sarkar, 55, all from the Boro Kalibari area, police said. The incident took place at Bandhu Sangha Shyama Puja Mandap in Mymensingh city's Boro Kalibari area.

Following the incident, a case was filed with Kotwali Police Station, accusing two men, Mamun and Imam, said Md Shiberul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Police later arrested Mamun and, after interrogation, produced him before a Mymensingh court this afternoon. The court sent him to jail, the OC added.

Quoting the allegations by the puja mandap committee, Md Abdullah Al Mamun, additional SP (crime) of Mymensingh police, said Mamun and his associate Imam from Kalibari area went to the puja mandap around 10:30 pm and demanded money from the mandap committee.

When the organisers refused, the duo got into an altercation with them and later stabbed three people, including in the chest.

The injured were taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) from where Bharati was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the additional SP.

The attackers also vandalised the idol, breaking one of its hands, the organisers alleged.
