‘Abrar Fahad murder a cruel example of how Indian hegemony had gripped our nation’
Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim today described the murder of Buet student Abrar Fahad as a "dark chapter" in Bangladesh's political history.
"This murder marks a dark chapter in our brutal politics. It stands as a cruel example of how ruthless Indian hegemony had gripped our nation," he said.
The IAB chief made the comments in a statement sent to the media today, marking the sixth death anniversary of Abrar Fahad.
Abrar, a student of electrical and electronics engineering at Buet, was beaten to death by the leaders and activists of the now-banned Chhatra League at a dormitory of the university in October 2019. The murder sparked outrage across the country and led to a ban on student politics on Buet campus.
In his statement, the IAB ameer urged the need to replace the current political system to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
He expressed sympathy for Abrar's parents, family members, and friends. "We pledge to ensure a Bangladesh-oriented positive politics and culture to atone for Abrar's blood," he added.
"This murder has multiple dimensions. Those who killed him were also Buet students and talented ones. Awami League will have to take the responsibility for turning such meritorious youths into murderers. This sick politics has driven thousands of our children to untimely deaths and turned many into killers," he added.
He added, "If Awami League's role in the Abrar murder is properly examined, it would become clear that the party itself should be banned."
