Cumilla-4 MP “beat up” Debidwar upazila chairman on parliament premises

During a meeting in the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, AL MP Razee Mohammad Fakhrul of Cumilla-4 assaulted and kicked Debidwar upazila chairman Abul Kalam Azad, stirring up resentment among the local AL officials and activists.

Meeting sources told The Daily Star that incensed Cumilla (North) AL grass-roots leaders headed to AL presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim's house to seek remedy in this matter.

They claimed that Abul Kalam Azad was publicly assaulted by Razee Mohammad Fakhrul over the formation of the Elahabad union under the Debidwar Upazila.

Three Cumilla Awami League leaders present in the meeting--Raushan Ali Master, AKM Shafiqul Alam and Mehdi Hasan confirmed the incident to The Daily Star.

Lawmaker Fakhrul did not receive calls when our correspondent called him to get his version of the incident.

According to Raushan Ali Master, the general secretary of the Cumilla North District Awami League, the lawmaker lost his temper when the names of the president and secretary of the Elahabad union unit of AL were announced because Abul Kalam Azad had backed the committee.

Mehedi Hasan, a member of the Cumilla (North) AL, who was sitting close to the MP said, all of a sudden, the MP swooped on Abul Kalam Azad kicking and punching him on his leg, neck, nose and head repeatedly.

"To save his life, we left the meeting room," said AKM Shafiqul Alam, youth and sports affairs secretary of Cumilla (North) AL, said.

Azad was first taken to the ENT hospital in the city's Tejgaon. Later he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Recently, AL MP from Rajshahi-1, Omar Faruk Chowdhury allegedly assaulted a college principal at his office.
