General secretary candidate turns to eco-friendly “Bon Kagoj” to fight campus litter

On the last day of campaigning for the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) elections, the campus was awash with posters and leaflets. Yet one stood out: the leaflet of general secretary candidate Meghmallar Bosu, carrying a unique message at the bottom -- "Bon Kagoj, if it falls on the ground, a tree will grow."

Speaking to reporters, Meghmallar said, "From the start of my campaign, I noticed the campus was littered with leaflets. That made me think -- could I do something more eco-friendly? That's how the idea of using 'Bon Kagoj' came about. A well-wisher helped me make these leaflets."

He explained, "I am distributing my leaflet to a hundred people. Not everyone will keep it. Some may throw it away. If they do, my plan is that from that discarded leaflet, a plant will grow."

"Bon Kagoj" (forest paper) is an eco-friendly creation of Mahbub Suman and his team Shalbrikkho. The paper is embedded with flower and vegetable seeds so that when buried in the soil, plants can sprout from it.
