DoE fines 2 construction firms Tk 5 lakh for cutting hills a month after MP threat

The Department of Environment (DoE) Chattogram region fined two Cumilla construction firms for razing hills a month after a local lawmaker issued a threat to a DoE official for investigating the onslaught on environment.
The two firms are Haque Enterprise and Techno Builders which were expanding a road at Sadar south upazila of Cumilla, a project of Roads and Highways.
The fine was imposed after a hearing at DoE office today.
Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE Chattogram region told The Daily Star that they fined two firms Tk 5 lakh initially after their investigation found 1,14,000 cubic feet of hill was cut up to feed up the project.
On December 25, a local lawmaker AKM Bahar Uddin issued a threat to deputy director of DoE Cumilla district office when she went to the spot for inspection.
