Indian national dies in Jashore jail
An Indian national died in Jashore Central Jail this morning after he fell sick.
The deceased was identified as Shamim Samir, son of Dhanendra Nath of Balrampur district in India's Uttar Pradesh.
Samir entered Bangladesh from India illegally through the border area of Rangamati, said Tuhin Kanti, jailor of Jashore Central Jail.
On March 8, 2019, the chief judicial magistrate of Rangamati sentenced Samir to one-year imprisonment without fine, the jailor said, adding that he was sent to Feni jail.
In March of 2020, Samir was sent to Jashore Central Jail. Three letters were sent to the Indian government asking them to take Samir back after his sentence expired. But there was no response, Jailor Tuhin said.
This morning when he went to take a bath in the jail, he fell sick. He was rushed to Jashore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead, Tuhin Kanti added.
M Abdur Rashid, a doctor at the emergency department of Jashore General Hospital, said Samir died before he was taken there. The cause of death will be known after receiving the autopsy report.
