A man was killed in a clash between followers of two councillor candidates at Mogoltuli Mogpukur Par area in Chattogram tonight.

The man was identified as Azgar Ali Babul, 52, a follower of Nazrul Islam Bahadur, the Awami League-backed councillor candidate in ward 28 of Chattogram City Corporation, reports our Chattogram correspondent quoting Saleh Mohammad Tanvir, commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.

Another man, Mahbub, was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital with gunshot wounds, he added.

Meanwhile, police have arrested 26 people including former councilor of CCC ward No-28 Abdul Quader, also a councilor candidate in the CCC polls who did not get party support, confirmed Sadip Kumar Das, officer in charge of Double Mooring Police Station in the port city.

Police sources said a clash ensued between followers of Abdul Quader -- a local AL leader --  and AL-backed councillor candidate Bahadur at Mogoltuli Mogpukur Par area around 8:30pm.

Babul sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to CMCH where on-duty doctors declared him dead around 9:30pm, said the CMP commissioner.

He said police were conducting drives to arrest the criminals.

No case was filed till the time of filing of this report.
