Power division to get Tk 8,556.63 crore arrears from govt, non-govt consumers

The power division will get Tk 8,556.63 crore from various government and non-government consumers as arrears, the power and energy ministry said at a meeting of a parliamentary watchdog.

The parliamentary standing committee on power and energy was also informed that Tk 6,962.64 crore remains due in the private sector while the power department owes Tk 746.86 crore to various departments of the government.

Besides, the power division will get Tk 197.11 crore from different semi-government departments while Tk 649.92 crore from LGRD divisions.

The parliamentary watchdog in the meeting asked the ministry to take necessary steps to recover the arrears and install prepaid meters across the country soon.

The committee also asked the ministry to raise the issue before the secretary level committee.

After the meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Shahiduzzaman Sarker, chief of the parliamentary body, told reporters that the committee has asked the ministry to take necessary legal steps to collect the arrears.

He also said prepaid meters reduce both wastage and theft of electricity.
