Rape at MC College hostel: hearing on charge sheet deferred again

A tribunal in Sylhet today again deferred the hearing on charge sheet of a case filed for gang-rape at Murari Chand College hostel in Sylhet on September 25 last year.

Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Mohitul Haque passed the order this morning and set January 12 to decide whether it will accept the charges or not, our Sylhet correspondent reports.

Advocate Shahiduzzaman Chowdhury, lawyer of the plaintiff, said, "The complainant has not received certified copy of the charge sheet and urged the court to allow more time to review it. Based on the appeal, the court has deferred the hearing."

"So far, we're preparing to file a no confidence plea on the charge sheet and it will be submitted on next hearing date," he said.

Earlier on January 3, hearing on the charge sheet was also deferred following the plaintiff's similar appeal.

On December 3, Sub-inspector Indranil Bhattacharya, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abul Kashem's court.

In the charge sheet, six were charged with rape of the woman while two were made accused of assisting them.

The rape accused are: Saifur Rahman, 28, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, 25, Tarekul Islam, 28, Arjun Laskar, 26, Mohammad Ainuddin alias Ainul, 26, and Misbaul Islam Rajon, 27.

Other accused are Rabiul Hasan, 25, and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, 25. All eight are arrested and in jail.
