Leaked question papers big business
A recent study by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) of public examination question leaks revealed some interesting insights. What is abundantly clear is that without a nexus between unscrupulous officials and coaching centres, the practice could not have evolved into a multi-crore taka business. The report revealed that the lax monitoring in overseeing question paper preparation and distribution is one of the major causes of such leaks. Where the preparatory process involves multiple personnel in composing, proof reading, counting, packaging and teachers opening sealed envelopes before examination provides ample opportunities for making digital copies for distribution over the internet and final sale.
The situation is exacerbated by the state of denial of authorities which only aids in encouraging the nefarious trade. There have been no instances of catching members of the racket, and holding them to account merely helps perpetuate the cracks in the system that degrades the quality of education in the country. Students are encouraged to take the short-cut in preparing for exams when there is a likelihood of getting a copy of an examination paper in advance.
Are we not merely encouraging upcoming generations to believe that the system of graft is acceptable? That it is possible to circumvent the system and still get excellent grades by not making necessary preparations for the examinations? It is high time authorities woke up to realities on the ground and reduced steps involved in question paper preparation and distribution. Stricter monitoring coupled with apprehending and convicting perpetrators are measures that need to be put in place.
