The Prime Minister's call made to the nation while inaugurating the Hajj programme to oppose the killing of innocents in the name of Islam is both timely and welcome. Not only are such killings of the innocent unjustified, but as the Prime Minister pointed out, they also undermine the religion of Islam which has no place for either militancy or terrorism.

Yet, it is important to realise that the use of Islam to further the militant aims of a small group of people can occur when the majority who are against such abuse of their religion remain silent. Thus, an essential measure in combating religious terrorism is to both denounce the killing of innocent people and to expose such extremism to be opposed to the ideals of Islam itself. Such calls, of course, must come from all sections of society, and come always and not selectively after an extremist attack only. Furthermore, it is important that the leaders within society in particular, be they political or otherwise, decry such actions so as to lead the way for others to follow suit and draw strength from, especially in times of fragility.

In line with that, we hope that the political, religious, civic leaders and others will pay heed to the Prime Minister's plea and follow suit in condemning such cold-hearted acts of injustice. And that the condemnations not only pay lip service but are also followed through by actions that will help bring some light to the nation in such times of darkness.
