The spirit of Eid
As the most joyful festival for Muslims is about to begin, it is important to engage in some spiritual stocktaking. The month long fast teaches abstinence and empathy for those who go hungry all year long. The feeling of brotherhood as people share their iftar with the less fortunate, giving Zakat and fitra to them, are all exercises in teaching us to be more compassionate, generous, tolerant human beings. Such principles are invaluable for any society and universal in their appeal.
It is deplorable to see the unscrupulous hiking of prices of essentials during this holy month, the increase in extortion by law enforcers and others holding positions of authority, just before Eid.
At a time when religion should appeal to people's most humane qualities, we see a surge in deceit, greed and corruption. An occasion as euphoric as going home for Eid has become a nightmare for many citizens who have to pay artificially hiked up fares. Tragedies are also common during Eid due to overcrowding, reckless driving, rickety modes of transport, ill-maintained roads and a general disrespect for human life.
On the eve of such an auspicious and happy occasion, we hope we can imbibe the true spirit of this festival by sharing our wealth with our brethren, refraining from unwholesome activities and enriching our character through good deeds.
We wish all our valuable readers and well-wishers Eid Mubarak!
