Resolving Dhaka's congestion

We are hardly surprised by a new estimation by Accident Research Institute (ARI) of BUET that Dhaka's traffic congestion eats up around 5 million working hours and causes an annual loss of Tk 20,000-55,000 crore. This paints a pathetic picture of the capital's overall traffic situation.

Employment in RMG factories

The survey covered 770 workers in Dhaka, Chittagong, Gazipur and Narayanganj, and found that the bulk of these workers could only produce their identity cards as proof of employment. This comes as a surprise as it is mandatory for BGMEA and BKMEA factories to provide appointment letters to workers employed by member companies.

Give Dalits their due

It's unthinkable that even after 47 years of independence, a section of the people should have to ask, or rather beg, for equal rights and opportunities, especially when the Constitution has expressly guaranteed equal rights and protection for all citizens.

Why liquidity crunch in banks?

The liquidity crunch that has hit the private sector has its roots in the Farmers Bank debacle. It went down under primarily because the bank management went for giving out wholesale credit without maintaining two fundamentals.

Erasing history

We are pleased to know that the High Court has ordered a halt to the demolition of historic buildings in Old Dhaka. The colonial era buildings located on Hrishikesh Das road began being demolished this month to make way for an eight-storied building for which permission was obtained from Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk).

It was indeed a heartbreak of a loss. After displaying a magnificent performance against the host to reach the final of the Nidahas Trophy, the much-hoped-for first win in a T20 final has once again evaded our men in green and red.

Necessity is the mother of invention

If picture speaks a thousand words then the one carried in the back page of this paper on Sunday speaks more than that. It shows several women garment workers walking on a footpath unshod, to grab a quick lunch since they don't carry lunch to work. They had come out without footgear to give a slip to their work supervisors because if they were detected leaving the factory premises during lunch break, they would have to pay for their absence from their wages.

Family terrorised over land

The dreadful ordeal of a family, terrorised over an 8.5 katha land by a gang of miscreants that included ruling party men, is alarming. We are aghast by such criminal behaviour which again brings to light how affiliation with powerful quarters and influence are being abused to intimidate, terrorise and blatantly rob people at gunpoint in our country—in this case, literally.
