AL-BNP understanding

Your editorial on 12th July, 2005 about the understanding of Jalil-Mosharraf on annihilating black money and purging hooliganism caught my attention. Although the commitment is praiseworthy, they have little clout in their respective party-hierarchy to make a dent in the situation. The commitment of Jalil-Bhuiyan was a glaring example of this. Possibly no one except Khelada Zia and Sheikh Hasina would be able to do anything in this regard.

There is an ingrained distrust between these two parties and it can't be alleviated or eradicated overnight. To solve the problem of strident student politics, hooliganism, nepotism, black money and many other nasty things, a unique meeting between the heads of the BNP and the AL should be arranged and it should be telecast through BTV so that the countrymen can watch the proceedings live.

Mere meeting of leaders having no real clout will not solve the problem, as rightly pointed out in your editorial.
