Anti-corruption Commission

Setting up of Anti-corruption Commission by the Government of Bangladesh is a welcome step especially in the context of our earning the title of most corrupt nation for the fourth consecutive year. Just after its formation the Commission has taken a good step by asking its officers and staff to submit the details of their wealth. This is a good beginning.

Press report says that the Commission has also decided to ask all the serving and retired officials to submit their wealth statements. This is also a good step. But before that more important steps are needed to be taken. In my view all ministers and MPs since the inception of Bangladesh should be asked to submit their wealth statements. It is an open secret that just to obtain party nomination most of the MPs had to pay huge amounts to party fund and on election campaign. So they need to explain clearly the source of their income and whether their known source of income justify their present standard of living.

The second important group that needs to be targeted by the Commission is the big businessmen. Most of the businessmen are making money by corrupt means. They do not even pay proper income tax, custom duty, VAT etc. Then there are professional groups like reputed lawyers, doctors etc. who evade income tax shamelessly.

It is only after taking appropriate action against these groups the Commission should target the government official and other officials. Will the anti-corruption Commission look into it?
