BBC poll

With regard to the views expressed by Ms. Nur Jahan in the DS of May 6 on BBC Poll to determine the greatest Bengalee of all times, I would like to say that people from same profession can be evaluated even though they do not belong to the same class (college/varsity etc.). Architect FR Khan who earned world-wide fame for designing the tallest building in the US excelled others in his field of work. Similarly, people belonging to different fields of work could also be evaluated on the basis of their legacy or influence over the lives of the people or course of the world.

Prior to this Poll, BBC, I remember, conducted a similar Poll among its British listeners to determine the greatest British Citizen of all times. The nominated citizens belonged to all walks of life. Such Poll generated wide interest and curiosity among the BBC listeners who were keen to know their great men and women.

I may also refer to a great book titled "The 100: A ranking of the most influential persons of history" by Michael Hart. The survey included great leaders from different fields: Prophets, Scientists, Philosophers, Writers, Artists, Discoverers etc. The author selected 100 persons in order, who had the greatest influence over mankind and the course of the world. Our great Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) topped that list.

I find no logic in her argument and wonder what made her dismiss outright such a laudable effort by BBC as meaningless and unacceptable.

I suggest that a similar poll may be conducted by different media periodically, say after every 25 years which I think will inspire the new generations to higher achievements. One may expect that the sequence of the names may change in such poll, some new names may get in, some drop out. But I firmly believe that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will remain on the top of the list in every poll with an ever increasing stature as long as Bangladesh lives.
