Beyond the silver castle
Every morning when I read the 'Letter to the Editor' page and the 'editorial', I feel happy and content, thinking at least there are some sane people around, who think constructively and try to make a difference. Their thoughts echo throughout the page, giving us hope and aspirations that all is not lost as yet. But the question is, whether there are any people on the two sides (ruling and opposition) to keep their respective parties abreast of the desire of the common people, so that they can learn, reform and act accordingly? As a government doctor, I have worked for the last 20 years in different capacities in various hospitals. Since we are rarely gifted with the art of writing (this is something that wanes with years of gruelling studies and devouring gigantic syllabuses) we are not in the habit of upholding our experiences. At times I feel the need that some of our experiences should come to light, so that our leaders can apprehend the real meaning of life.
I suggest they take turns to come and sit in the out patient departments of the hospitals, let them experience the combination of ill health and poverty. Let them witness the pain and neglect stark in the eyes of hundreds of patients that we treat everyday. I really can't blame the two parties for the unnecessary bickering and mud slinging they are engaged in, how can anyone sitting in air-conditioned rooms, sipping mugs of tea and coffee, comprehend what's going on beyond their silver castle?
