In your "All time greats" series covering the legendary filmmaker Bimal Roy, your cultural correspondent mentions about his first directional venture, "Udayer Pathe" and also says that the movie was made with a cast of unknown artistes." I vividly remember the actors and actresses of that film whose Hindi version was titled "Hamrahi". They were Binata Bose and I Bhattacharya.

The film depicting a struggling journalist whose efforts to uplift the poor and underprivileged sections of society draws the admiration of a rich girl had a highly progressive theme. It showed the crass class divisions of Calcutta's social set-up.

The movie was shown at Calcutta (now Kolkata) New Cinema (at Dharamtala) a hall owned by New Theatres whose founder the late BN Sircar left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry.

Incidentally, while discussing Bimal Roy's life one should not forget that he trained and reared another great filmmaker, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who has many well-merited films to his credit and started his career as a film editing assistant.
