Brisk Eid Shopping

When we saw brisk Eid shopping at Elephant Road, New Market, Gausia Market, Baitul Mukarram, Sadarghat, Gulistan, Islampur, Bangabazar and on footpaths in Dhaka, and various places in Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Barisal and Khulna, didn't we feel astonished ?

Sarees and 'lehengas' worth ten thousand to eighty thousand taka were purchased a piece. There have been no dearth of buying varieties of Panjabis, children's garments, shoes, cosmetics, polao rice, semai, lachcha, chicken, beef, mutton, sweets and what not?

There have been many pompous shows, fairs, rallies and festivals, parties and merry-making. Don't these create an impression that Bangladesh is not a poor country?

The fact is that the majority of the people of Bangladesh are poor and about 40 per cent of them are living below poverty line. They do not have proper house to live in, no electricity, no pure drinking water and no medical care.

Have not we seen hundreds of young and old men, women and children clad in dirty and torn clothes, half naked, half fed, ill nourished, lean and thin, retarded, invalid, blind and lame in each and every Eid congregation, on roads and streets on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr?

Let the rich and poor people of our country feel and accept that they belong to same flesh, bone and blood and same nationality. If the poor people of our country continue to suffer, the rich people will also suffer one day. We have discovered and found that the history of 'DELUGE' repeats itself when the differences of life style and standard of life of the rich and the poor are wide apart.
