Can we adopt a little more from Cantonment?

It's nice to see that of late many of the 'Pick and Pay' type of shops have come out in the Metropolis and are doing bustling business. May I humbly remind that it was the Canteen Stores Deport (CSD) that showed the way at a time when entrepreneurs in the civil society were thinking it yet to be a risky venture as they were worried about probable large scale shoplifting and were not feeling confident if the culture of the 'Pick and Pay' type of shopping could have an easy sail in this part of the globe.

It's nice again to see that many of the metropolis roads are now being adorned with flower beds the trend of which was again set by the Cantonment when their road dividers and walkway sides were adorned with nicely maintained flowery beds with no two-legged or four-legged creatures to pick the flowers or to spoil the beds.

There is no denial of the fact that traffic discipline is one of the reasons that the people outside the cantonment like to have a drive through the cantonment or to have their social parties arranged in the 'Senakunja'. As an individual contributing to the different positive dimensions of the cantonment, as a resident of the cantonment and as a member of the Armed forces I took it to be a nice and kind tribute to us and for which I sincerely thank the writer.

I would like to take this opportunity to stress that there are still other aspects which we can adopt from cantonment that will definitely turn our dear Dhaka city into a clean, nice and discipline metropolis of world standard.

Can we not get rid of the posters that have covered every wall, every pillar, every way-side bill boards, name plaques and what not? Most of the beautiful architectural, esthetical structures and national monuments are also not immune from the posturing menace. The posters range from Scabies Ointment to obnoxious, vulgar and repealing exposures of some cheap cinema extras to posters of some Kallu Bhai, Lallu Bhai contesting for some positions in the local or national bodies.

I am sure there are adequate provisions in the existing laws that prohibit this type of unauthorised posturing. Only problem is that our concerned civil authorities do not exert themselves. In my opinion it is very easy to wipe out the obnoxious poster culture. Almost all such posters do carry the name and address including the telephone number of the beneficiaries. Why can we not reach up to the root and book them for such unauthorised acts. Just we are to initiate legal procedures including levying fines and other forms of punishments as stipulated in the concerned municipality or other laws. This is definitely going to eradicate the poster menace and thus we can make the surrounding much cleaner and nicer.

Looking forward to see a nicer Dhaka city.
