The Dhaka University Film Society arranged a week-long (May11-May18) film festival which included films of Bangladesh and West Bengal. The choices were really appreciable. I watched two films -- "Chhutir Ghanta" and "Surreng Bou", of which "Chhutir Ghanta" left a strong impression upon me. I watched it there for the first time and, when I was watching, the film reminded me of a recent Hollywood movie "Cast Away" starred by Tom Hanks. I was speechless at the depths of the producer's artistry. The dramatic twist that leads the boy to his tragic death, the psychological stress on the boy in the film are a strong contrast with the hollowness of today's nonsense Bengali movies.

The movie which was produced many years ago has startling similarity with Cast Away done in recent time. Cast Away is also about a person thrown alone on an island battling to survive against all adversities. The boy in "Chhutir Ghanta" is certainly cast away lonely (in the bathroom) from the human habitation. The scene when the boy parodied his teacher in the bathroom puts a similarity with Cast Away in which Tom Hanks makes a portrait of a human face on a ball to get a companion with whom he can pass the time which hangs heavy on him. The boy also tries to get company and pass the time. Both movies perhaps show the helplessness of a human being in solitude . It is amusing to see that a Bengali producer's thought matches with a Hollywood producer's, whose thinking came later.

Cast Away is thought to be one of the best films ever produced but the remaking of "Chhutir Ghanta" or making films like this may replace the position occupied by Cast Away or other Hollywood movies. We have lots of potential in our country. Recent endeavours by Tarek Masud or Tanvir Mokammel should be highly encouraged, and it must be made sure that they do not face any nonsense approach by the censor board. Lastly, I want to thank the family of the Dhaka University Film Society for arranging such a show and request them to arrange this sort of shows again and again.
