Contain terrorism

We often get news of illegal trafficking of foreign currencies out of Bangladesh. The latest attempt was made on 5 March, 2004. The smugglers tried to smuggle out currencies of different countries worth Tk 4 crore. The government is assuming that since long a big amount of money is being laundered out of the country. The problem has become so acute that the government has decided "to set up an independent inter-agency strike force to fight money laundering and other financial crimes, including the fund flow for terrorist activities" (The Daily Star, 8 April, 2004).

There are a big number of NGOs, banks and business firms in Bangladesh, which may have connections with foreign partners. The facilities of these financial structures may be used not only by the persons connected with the extremists in Bangladesh, but also for transfer of money resources to other parts of the world, e.g., Kashmir, Chechnya, Sri Lanka, North-east India, etc. Terrorism has no association with any true religion, civilisation or nationality. Recent terrorist attacks on trains in Madrid, in Moscow metro, in a theatre in Indonesia, etc., prove that terrorism has tremendously expanded. It also shows that no state has reliable protection against attacks of the extremists. As a result of the terrorist attacks, innocent people are being killed. Even in Bangladesh, many innocent people were killed by terrorist bombs at a Bengali New Year Day cultural function at Ramna batamul, bomb explosions in a CPB public meeting in Paltan Maidan and four cinema halls in Mymensingh town. The most recent (2 April, 2004) seizure of the huge amount of sophisticated weapons in Chittagong shows that the territory of our country is being used by international terrorist syndicates. Therefore, for the safety of the country as well as of the world, it has become incumbent upon us to unearth the channels being used by the terrorists to get financial help and arms support for organising and carrying out terrorist attacks in different places.
