Corruption in passport

When people apply for passports, they have to pay Tk 500-2000 for police verification. A few days ago, I paid 1500 taka to the police officer who came to my house for verifying my information. I am wondering why we have to pay the police to do their job. The government should take drastic measures to root out the pervasive corruption in the passport office.
