I have gone through your editor's valuable and analytical commentary of 25 October, 2003. I do agree with most of the observations, albeit with some exceptions.

I agree that our leaders do need to have a better understanding of how the media operates and its overall scope of operation, objective, obligation and responsibilities. The weaknesses of some in any profession must not be shown as a collective drawback, particularly by the country's highest executive.

Besides, this was hardly a platform for the PM to dwell on the media when the entire country was waiting to hear about the contributions made by the Bangladesh delegation at the OIC Conference. At a time when the entire Muslim Ummah is passing through the most critical crisis with respect to its unity and mission, our PM should have told the nation about our individual and collective roles.

Being a Freelance columnist, and not belonging to the regular cadre of the journalistic community, my experience leads me to believe that our media had contributed greatly toward the development of democracy and democratic traditions.

That said, there also seems to be a growing tendency on the part of some in the profession to indulge in "yellow" journalism. Of much greater concern is the fact that there are some newspapers that appear to be clearly advancing the cause of one particular political party while actively engaging in degrading the" image" of the other. I guess this has now become a global phenomenon in the media world, or is it?
