FLYOVERS, not enough

Yet another flyover will be completed in the next three years to ease the traffic logs. While this should be a welcome reprieve for all travellers it is simply not a long-term fix for the increasing number of vehicles and population. The traffic will continue to increase. At times like this the government, instead of wasting its resources on building flyover after flyover, should look at alternative methods of public transportation. Something that is easy, safe and resource generating and can be used to pay for itself.

The best mode of public transit system is the inner city rail. Instead of flyovers the government should create train systems that arrive every 30 minutes at stations located in major sections of every city. We already have trains that connect different cities so why not a system to go from Gulshan to Banani to Dhanmondi. We already have buses that can make localised stops within the areas. The customers will need to buy tickets. The rides should be secure and clean and the payment obtained from these rides should be used to maintain this public system. Dhaka itself has 9 million people and if even half that population attempts to use the train, imagine the amount of revenue that can be generated to maintain this system.

The flyovers while great for a short-term fix will not sustain the population growth. Also, they do not generate any form of revenue for upkeep and maintenance. It is time enough for us to take a chapter out of cities such as Tokyo, New York and London which literally curbed their traffic and transportation problems greatly with inner city rail services. Why can't we?
