Friday weekend

We have seen numerous discussions on holidays. Some believe that Bangladesh should follow other countries and have Saturday and Sunday as weekend while others believe that Friday, being the day for the Jumma prayer, should be the day off. It always bothers me when scholars and lawmakers choose to ignore the fact that Bangladesh is a People's Republic and not an Islamic State. Because it is a People's Republic our laws should not be kept separate from religious beliefs and laws.

Given that even Islam doesn't require that one take Friday off to attend the Jumma, I still do not see why Bangladeshis need to take an entire day off to attend the prayer. Taking an hour or two to complete the prayer and returning to work is quite normal and acceptable. The entire world works on Fridays and as a developing nation we need to be open for business with our counterparts to be able to make deals or take advantage of situations that better our economic standing. Instead, when people are working our offices are shut off. When we return to work on Sundays the entire world is taking a break so when we are ready to trade and have meetings with international business liaisons and partners we cannot. It only makes sense for the sake of efficiency, productivity and of course to improve our GDP that the lawmakers look into changing the weekends from Friday and Saturday to Saturday and Sunday so that we do not waste two days a week by failing to be productive.

We are definitely not self-sufficient and we cannot pretend that international interdependence does not exist. Furthermore, our status as a poverty-stricken developing nation does not give us too many opportunities. If we can achieve a slight increase in our GDP or increase our efficiency by changing these weekends it is in our best interest to do so. Religion is important but not all Bangladeshis are Muslim and Islam doesn't require us to have weekends on certain days of the week so that we can pray.
