Garment sector

We are watching with deep anguish and despair the mayhems, which are taking place in our country. First Kansat, then Demra and on May 23, 2006 there was violence at Savar and Tajgaon. The incidents have made us dumb with horror and disbelief. The rioters set on fire and damaged about 150 garment factories, looted different valuable goods worth crores of taka, they also damaged more than 120 vehicles, sixteen vehicles were burnt to ashes. What a devilish act!

It is a great loss to the country as Bangladesh was doing pretty well in the garment sector. We are proud of our products but some quarters are not happy with this, they are bent on destroying this business.

Our heartfelt sympathy for the owners of those factories, which have been destroyed. It is an unbearable blow.

We do not think the workers have done it, they will never destroy the factories from which they earn their bread and also know very well that thousands of them will become jobless. So it is quite obvious that there is foul play, a very sinister one.

JP chairman and former President H M Ershad said, "A vested quarter is trying to damage Bangladesh's apparel sector. The main driving force of the country's economy." He also said, "The workers cannot commit such heinous acts, as they have brought this sector to such a stage at the cost of their sweat and blood." I think he could not be more correct in his assessment of the situation.

We urge the people to remain alert, if anyone tries to incite the workers it must be reported to the authorities immediately. It is a national crisis. Instead of blaming the government, the opposition political parties must join hands with the government to combat it for the sake of peace and prosperity of Bangladesh.
