Grameen Phone (GP) Ltd. a leading cell phone company in Bangladesh set up an example by renovating the century-old Chittagong Railway Station Building -- a landmark physical structure in the port city, without any change in its original structure. This building was built in 1896 and was on the verge of ruin without any proper care of the concerned authority. GP spent about 1 crore Tk for preserving this heritage. This is a noble task indeed. I think this type of job is first of its kind in Bangladesh. Preserving the national architectural heritage should be given priority by the government. But it's a matter of great regret that at present most of the historical buildings are either falling apart or occupied illegally by local miscreants. If this goes on our future generation will be deprived of enjoying these historical sights. Not only that, foreign tourists may be declined and thereby valuable foreign currency. In this regard GP has played a pioneer role by coming forward to save our national heritage. Though this is a single example but other private companies and business tycoons should be inspired by this type of example. They should join hands with the government to save our national historical heritages and to remove other national problems like poverty, illiteracy, over population etc. GP has shown the avenue and other companies should follow it.
