Human rights
I refer in particular to assaults on women and police use of barbaric methods of torture against prisoners.
These practices, if they continue to be left unchecked or overlooked as unfortunate facts of life in Bangladesh, will reverberate negatively on Bangladeshis everywhere, even more so on those residing in the US, where racism and anti-immigrant sentiments have exploded since the 9/11 attacks.
The legitimacy of immigrants' claims to human rights in the face of ever-growing infringements on those rights seems out of place when one considers the flagrant disregard for humanity in their own countries.
