Internet and our finance minister
Recently, a remark of our Finance Minister shocked me to the core. He mentioned that it is Internet era, therefore Saturday holiday does not harm International Trade. It is definitely true that Internet has brought many revolutions to our life, but not in Bangladesh. How many Internet users we have in Bangladesh per 1000 people? And what is the network speed? The Finance Minister should not forget he was one of the key members of the cabinet that denied Submarine Cable connectivity to the country due to threat to 'National Security'. And as a senior member and policy maker of the ruling party, history will never forgive him and those who took that decision. Till today we suffer for this.
In addition, even if we had high speed Internet connection for the masses like many other countries, would it be wise to shut down business for a day? Did the US, Europe, Australia, Japan or any other country which provided high speed Internet that allows running various Applications including Banking and Trading, shut down their business for a day? It is a human behaviour to accept new technologies and implement them in life, not shutting any other existing doors as a trade off.
