Leather industry

My nephew, who is in the final and fourth year of graduating from the Leather Institute, is worried about job openings towards a good and steady career. I feel a bit guilty as I had recommended him to go into Leather, as we have plenty of hides and skin, and the value-added end products have high market value, especially for export.

The government is not indifferent to the potentiality of this sector, and has taken a series of steps to develop this industry, including the latest initiative to shift the outdated factories from the metropolitan DCC zone to a new industrial site. The momentum has to be built up to generate the right type of news in the media.

The official 'thrust' has to be more visible, to encourage more students to enter this field, to build up the technical manpower. This new profession has yet to 'click' (like ICT), suffering so long from the 'informal' image in the development activities of the nation. Professionalism has to penetrate further at different vertical and horizontal levels (the SMEs have the sane complaint, seeking the shining sun).

It is encouraging to learn that leaders like Italy is showing more interest in this Bangladesh industry, and before long Bangladeshi finished leather goods would entice international respect and recognition on a much wider scale.

Let us dress the buyers completely, from head to foot.
