Madrassah boys and cricket

This refers to the letter by Mr. Mawaz, pertaining to the captioned subject that appeared in this column on 5 May, 05. First, it is no fault of Mr Mawaz to have watched such unskilful cricket by madrassah boys in their long outfit! Mr. Mawaz can be rest assured that save for a miracle madrassah boys have very little chance to play top class cricket. Cricket is an expensive game, be it at friendly, club or league level. Cost of cricket equipment plus the fancy clothing are out of the reach of madrassah boys They cannot really afford to play cricket. Mostly orphans and children from low income groups study at madrassah. The long outfit they wear is not only compulsory but much cheaper than shirts and trousers and far more comfortable for praying.

We hate to admit that it was a bit rude on the part of Mr. Mawaz to focus on such a level of cricket. After all, like all children these boys too can have the urge to play, no matter how they play or whatever clothes they wear!
