I would like to respond to Mr. Rezaur Rahman's letter on the "Maglev Melodrama: Act II", which he wrote from London.

Mr. Rahman has said that the scheme is "not yet commercially or economically viable". The system in the USA is perfectly viable as it entails less than one-third of the costs of the German system that was used in Shanghai. Mr. Rahman further states, "It is expensive to maintain and will need expatriates to service". That again is wholly untrue. The Maglev has no wheels and therefore very few moving parts and is thus very cheap to maintain. Of course, training would be given to the technicians in Bangladesh so that no expatriates would be required. Mr. Rahman then comments on the existing railways , "We have a rail link between Dhaka and Chittagong, say 250km. It takes 6 hours in either direction. Why can't it run faster?"

Well, Mr. Rahman travelled on Eurostar as he says. Eurostar is NOT a normal train on normal tracks merely made to run faster, it is a special "Hi tech" train run on special tracks that allows it to move much faster. You cannot merely take a normal train on normal tracks and make it run much faster, as Mr. Rahman knows.

I think that the objections being raised to Maglev in Bangladesh are not valid.
