The new monogram of Police

Recently the government has changed the uniform and the monogram of the police force. 'Shapla' and the leaves of jute plants have replaced the boat in the monogram. We have noticed that some quarters are criticising this step and calling it an act of narrow-mindedness, but I see no harm in these changes. 'Shapla' is our national flower and jute is known as the golden fibre of Bangladesh. I think it is quite justified because police should not wear a monogram, which is the symbol of a political party. If 'nouka' (boat) had been replaced by 'dhaner shish', then it would have been unjust and deplorable.

We hope that the attitude of our police personnel shall also change along with the change of uniform and monogram, as we hear so many allegations against them. They should perform their duties with honesty, sincerity, and dedication, so that we could not only become proud of them but also trust them.

Arundhati Roy, in her book 'The God of Small Things', depicts a police station, where on the wall behind the inspector of police, a red and blue board said: Politeness, obedience, loyalty, intelligence, courtesy, efficiency these are the real strength of the police! We think our policemen should also have all these qualities.
