Nuclear energy

I was reading Dr. Anwar Hussain's mail about Chernobyl tragedy, published on May 25. I fully agree that if proper standards are followed using nuclear technology can bring great blessings to a power-starved country like Bangladesh. We should consider some facts very seriously. We import oil, which has a very unstable international market. The Bangladesh government is basically giving subsidy to supply oil at a reduced price.

Future of gas and oil in Bangladesh is not good. If our gas reserves finish we will be in great trouble in near future. Our policy makers should think seriously about using nuclear technology. Most of the western countries

are using it to generate electricity. Why not we? Besides, this is a very environment-friendly technology. I think our news media needs to focus on this matter a lot more. They should encourage the government to think of this technology in all seriousness.

We already have Atomic Energy research facilities in our country with a good number of experts. I think The Daily Star can really bring up this issue forward to the people and the policy makers.
