Our footbridges

On the one hand, the DCC has built many footbridges and, on the other, it has demolished and dismantled several of them. It has also abandoned some under-construction footbridges.

The DCC has constructed three underpasses in the city. The huge underpass at Gulistan is reported to be faulty and unsafe. Two other underpasses one each at Gabtoli and Mohakhali are ill planned, dirty and not properly maintained. As such, pedestrians hardly use these underpasses.

Most of the women and children, old, weak and sick persons do not like to use footbridges. This is because it is very inconvenient, painstaking and tiresome to climb on the high-rise bridges and to get down from them.

The fact is that the DCC has spent several hundred crores of taka whimsically, wastefully and uselessly on construction of footbridges and underpasses. But unfortunately there is no accountability and transparency of the lapses, omissions, inefficiency and corruption.

We would request the DCC not to construct any footbridge in future. Rather, the DCC may construct small underpasses and earmark more and more Zebra Crossings on roads and streets and ensure their proper maintenance and supervision, enabling the pedestrians to cross the busy roads and streets easily, comfortably and safely.
